CAF: Building Auckland Transport’s new electric trains

In 2014, train manufacturer Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) started work on building 57 new electric trains for Auckland Transport, as part of a new integrated transport system throughout New Zealand’s largest city. We spoke to CAF’s Engineering Department Finishing Area Manager, Roberto Urizar to find out more about the journey of the project.

What was your overall vision for the Auckland Rail project?
I would say that it has been a very interesting project where we have had the chance to develop and design a train starting from scratch (there was not another train that the customer wanted to be similar to). I would also like to point out that we very much appreciated the help from the customer on the interior design aspect as their designer was very involved in the project, which was great.

How important do you think it is that the interiors of trains look modern & inviting?
I would say that is vital to have an inviting look, otherwise passengers will complain and would avoid using the train. We have had projects where the look was more “classic” and not modern at all, but we managed to provide a warm and attractive look. In the case of the Auckland project, the modern look was also a key target for them.

What were the key considerations when choosing floor coverings for this project?
We were looking for a durable/robust floor carpet, that also allowed us to provide a modern look for the trains.

How important is sustainability regarding floor coverings?
Sustainability is becoming more and more important in rail. It is definitely an important consideration to us. In the case of Auckland, it has been one step more.

Are you happy with the floor covering products chosen: Tessera Alignment FR carpet and Coral Duo FR entrance matting? Do you have any feedback from Auckland already regards flooring?
We do not have any feedback yet, but up to now we have not received any complaint and all the comments we get from the customer and our maintenance staff are always good.

What did you enjoy most about the Auckland rail project?
The possibility to develop a design with the assistance of a designer with experience in the rail industry.
